How to Install a USB Outlet

Now that smart phones, tablets and other devices have become commonplace, being able to charge quickly and easily is more important than ever. If you’re tired of dealing with cluttered charging stations, then consider upgrading to a USB Outlet. At Mr. Electric of Katy, we help local Houston area families and businesses find ways to improve the convenience, safety and efficiency of their electrical systems. Are you unsure if making the switch to USB outlets is right for you? Here are just a few reasons why doing so might be worth the effort.

What Is a USB Outlet?

USB outlets work the same way as conventional outlets. Both varieties provide access to traditional plugs for your household appliances, tools and electronics. However, they include one or two additional areas where a USB cord can be directly plugged into the unit.

Benefits of Upgrading to a USB Outlet

There are many reasons why USB outlets are becoming a popular choice in homes across the country. In most modern families, everyone in the home has at least one cell phone, tablet, smart watch or similar device that needs to be charged on a regular basis. In fact, there may be so many devices that it becomes a challenge to keep items charging without having to unplug other necessary electronics. When you switch to USB outlets, you can charge your phone without having to unplug the bedside lamp or TV. You can stop carrying around those bulky plugs and declutter the areas where your family prefers to charge their electronics. You’ll enjoy faster charge times, less mess and more convenience.

How to Install a USB Outlet

Always turn off all power to the outlet before you begin. Neglecting this step could result in personal injury or dangerous electrical hazards. Once the circuit has been tested, and you’re sure it isn’t receiving power, you can remove the original outlet cover with the appropriate screwdriver. Then, remove the receptacle from the wall by unscrewing with a screwdriver or a drill. Disconnect the five wires and use needle-nose pliers to straighten them. Connect the wires to the new USB receptacle, according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Place the wires and receptacle into the wall box and tighten the screws securely. Place the new USB outlet cover into position and attach using a screwdriver. Restore power to the outlet via the circuit breaker and test to ensure that it works properly. If you run into problems or feel uncomfortable handling wires, then contact a certified electrician in Houston who can perform the task quickly and safely.
